Math

Week 36:
This week we talked about place value, measuring by the foot, and we review solving problems for the missing number. We also got some great Math tools in the class.

We counted up to 200 by 10s and then backwards from 200 by tens using the bean bags.

Week 34 &35: Measurements and Math Detectives

We have reviewed measuring, except this time, instead of just measuring by the inch, students learned how to measure by the foot. We also have been practicing some really tricky math work. We're learning how to solve problems that have missing numbers. I told the students they needed to think like detectives and use the clues they find in the equation. We always start with the sum, perform the opposite function, and use the final math clue to figure out what number is missing.

Week 33: Symmetry, Symmetry, Symmetry-

Symmetry was the focus of this week. I want the students to start thinking about all the things in our environment that are symmetrical. We went outside and drew all the things that were symmetrical in the garden. I am very impressed with what the students all came up with. We also created Symmetry Creatures and Symmetry block sculptures.

We continue to work on word problems as well as addition and subtraction equations every class. The more comfortable your child is with adding and subtracting, the more prepared he/she will be for next year. The students love silly word problems, so anytime you have a minute try and think of a silly problem for your child.

Week 31-32:
We continued our study of 3D shapes, talked about symmetry and we practiced a review of addition, subtraction, and time. Below you'll see how we used problem solving skills to create 3D marshmellow and toothpick sculptures.

Week 29-30:
We have continued with our exploration of geometry this week and it has been so much fun. We just got into 3D shapes. The students LOVED learning how to draw triangular prisms and cubes.

Week 28:

This week in Math we did a quick review of time and then we jumped into geometry. Students did a wonderful job identifying their shapes.

Week 27:
What time is it? We continued our time studies this week, and I am incredibly impressed with what the students have done. We also had a break with some sun popping through and were able to take our sun dials for a spin.

Week 26:
Tick- tock goes the clock clock clock. We're really getting into telling time this week. I'm so impressed- students are able to tell time to the 5 minutes.

Week 25:

Students completed their wonderful math accordion book stories based on the Japanese Tale, The Rice Cake that Got Away. We also pretended we were as small as a mouse, and wondered how much taller things would be than us.

Week 24:
Learning about time is a pretty abstract concept. I thought it would be best if we just jumped into it. Here the students are jumping by 5s on their own obstacles they made.

Week 23:
After reading the story, The Rice Cake that Got Away, we were inspired to make an accordion book story where students put their own math equations into the story. Some stories have 6 rice cakes escape and the old man is only left with 3 rice cakes. Students created their own equations and endings of the story on their own.

Week 22:
We're getting ready for a unit on telling time, and before we jump into that we have been reviewing our addition and subtraction. Please continue to practice at home.

Week 21:

We reviewed our symbols with a fun dance game and worked on measurements. Your child should be able to measure to the half inch.

Week 17:

This week we learned about the magical symbols greater than and less than.

Week 16:

We have been talking about sorting in science, which fit in nicely with measurement in Math. We talked about lining objects up with the end of the ruler in order to measure, there are 12 inches in a foot, and that a foot is a standard ruler. We also talked about how the United States uses a different form of measurement than most countries.

Week 14:

This week the class learned how to conduct a survey, how to tally votes, and how to depict their data in a bar graph.

Week 12 & 13:
Counting by 10s and double digit math equations. In the picture below you'll see the students designed pictures using the 10s and 1s blocks. After they are complete the students had to add how many were in their design.
In the picture below the students are making collages with their 10s and 1s. This was the same day we got a visit from Emilia's chickens, as a result, most of the designs were in the shape of one of the chickens.

Week 10-11

I have been splitting the groups by levels for the past two weeks and it is going very well. We are continuing to explore tens and ones digits, we are practicing adding and subtracting double digit numbers as well. Some students are even learning about carrying.

Week 9:
This week we introduced adding double digit numbers! Very exciting. We talked about place value and also created giant number lines.

Week 8: Oct. 7

This week was mostly a review. We practiced a lot with word problems, as well as creating parts of a whole number.

Here we are making some number lines.

Practice word problems

Parts of a whole build a wall...

Week 7: Oct. 1

We're continuing to work on counting forwards and backwards, and also counting, counting, counting! On our trip to the beach we counted up to two hundred footsteps from Third St to the beach. We started to make giant number lines in the sand, but there was a bit too much excitement to focus on that. You may notice your child came home with some flash cards this weekend. This is for your child to study and practice with. We want the addition and subtraction to be second nature for them.

I've been letting the students take turns going up to the board to work on a word problem. This week was all secret subtraction words, but next week I'm going to mix it up. I try to think of something the student likes, and make a special equation just for that student. For example, there were 7 fairies and 3 flew away. How many fairies were left? There were 20 lizards, 10 went to look for food, how many were left? There were 16 Knights, 6 were slayed by dragons, how many Knights remained?

Week 6: Sept 23

Equations, equations, equations. We're still working on subtraction and addition, now we're moving into number groups above ten. We made it all the way to 20!

Week 5: Sept 16

This week was all about Subtraction. We read the story, The Queen Who Lost Things, and we talked about secret subtraction words, like, lost, fewer than, take away, minus. We also met the math gnomes! These are little gnomes we keep in the classroom who help up with our math processes.

Week 3:

We made our math equations extra challenging as we tried to solve for a missing variable this week. We also learned about secret addition words that tell us to add.

Week 2: August 26

This week we focused on math equations using addition. We used garbanzo beans as our manipulatives, and created sums up to 15.

Week 1: August 19

This week we really focused on the qualities of numbers. We created pictures for the numbers 1-12, talked about the power of zero and infinity, and also did some basic equations using rocks.

Here we are practicing counting and grouping as we played "The Ants Go Marching". As you can see, these ants are marching three by three.
